reading images, making bridges

"We are surrounded by worn-out images, and we deserve new ones." - Werner Herzog

"Stare, pry, listen, eavesdrop. Die knowing something. You are not here long." - Walker Evans

Talk to me about the differences between these two images. Deconstruct the images so that you analyze the importance of the context, the differences, and the values associated with these images. This is good practice for finding points of juxtaposition for your final.

  1. With the lady that had the stab wound, there was violence involved, that someone was trying to hurt her or even end her life. The lady with the c-section was trying to produce life, even though birth is sort of a violent experience. She had to be cut to be able to have her baby. This was done with a doctor present, maybe the father of the child and in a sterile, hospital setting. We don't know if her wounds were self inflicted, were done in jail or done by someone else on the outside. We have two women, two scars and two different purposes for them being there. One was producing life and the other was trying to take a life.
In true Notebooks, the boys were given pencils and notepads to write their stories. The pencils, in that case, were used to produce something good. But before class was over, all of the pencils had to be collected because they could be used as a weapon. So in this case, the pencils could be used for good or evils just like the knives that were used on the women.
