When we see ads on television we usually see "pretty" and skinny women, mostly using sex appeal to sell a product. From our lecture yesterday, we realize that when we associate successful, "popular", or "perfect" with a so called hot girl. What I mean by this is that we subconsciously stereotype people. With ads, we are conditions and brainwashed into think beautiful is only defined as certain way. Also in many other ads subliminal messages may be presented. In True Notebooks we see how we stereotyped the writers beforehand; we assumed they were uneducated or did not have the ability to write well. We quickly see how truly smart these men are. This raises a gender issue as well, we also do not expect women to be prisoners or be in jail. There are no women in True Notebooks. Kris told me that we like learning about outsiders because "its fun", this is why people by things that use sex in their ads or product or even their message because it is fun and interesting to us.

Here are some pictures of subliminal messages in advertisements, and examples representing how "sex sells".

  1. Ha! Not exactly that it's fun, but that we like to make things that aren't us exotic. We like to watch tribes on National Geographic, but why? Why is that exoticism interesting? How is it dangerous to us and to the tribe?

I do think it's interesting that we only see male prisoners in this text and our female character is a nun. This is pretty gender stereotyped. There are women in prison too. However, like Mike was pointing out, this text also casts away some gender roles by showing us men who want to discuss and write about emotions (often emotions are considered feminine). Even when they talk about their emotions and open up, they seem to resort back to saying "Nobody wants to hear that" or somehow silencing this more sensitive version of themselves.

I think you are starting to see that how we are "taught to look" at different groups of people is important to look at and assess. What do you do with this evaluation? What do you "do" with knowing that women are used to "sell" something (as sexual objects) and male prisoners are used to portray a world that seems scary and removed from us? Now that you see this big ideas, how do they resonate or function in our world at large?

  2. This goes back to the question about gays and lesbins and how they have the opposite emotions at the times which are feminine or masciline. This make you look at the inter and outer world as if it were natural to nature of all beings. I don't know if by knowing that women are used to sell an sexual object that we do this selling. It is confusing to know this and care at the same time because you don't know what ladie is sold. Far as the men go that is something that is unexplainable at this instant. Can you explain more to me about this topic because I have been told lots of things about these element but am a little afraid to wrap my thoughts up in these concept.? How do you feel about the male in the outer world that is removed from us?
